Physically-challenged Islam challenges life

Being a physically challenged youth, Islam Maal, a resident of Kamarkhara Village in Tongibari Upazila of the district, is trying to reach his goal with his confidence and enthusiasm.

He has a dream to be a banker. He got admitted to the B.Com Honours Course in Management after passing HSC examination. The district education officer and college teachers assured him of standing beside him.

Abdur Razzak Mollah, an old farmer of Kamarkhara Village, has been taking care of his three grand children- Islam, Aslam and Yunus. Islam’s father Golam Hossain works at his brother’s shop. Abdur Razzak brought his three grand-children after birth as Islam’s father cannot bear their educational expenses due to poverty. Two expatriate maternal uncles of Islam Aker Hossain and Mukter Hossain took the responsibility of the entire family including their nephew’s educational expenses.

Islam got A- from commerce group from Dighirpar AC Institution and secured B grade in the same group from Serajabad Rana Shafiullah College.

He got admitted to Mirkadim Hajji Amzad Ali Degree College in Management. The college is 15 kilometres away from home. So he has to go to the college by rickshaw and auto-rickshaw.

Islam’s elder brother Aslam Hossain passed HSC examination from Government Science College in 2014. He has been taking preparation to go abroad for study.

Ismail Maal said he has firm confidence in study though he is a physically-challenged youth. He wants to go ahead if everyone helps him. He also admitted his two maternal uncles’ contribution to his study.

His grandfather Abdur Razzak and elder brother Aslam Hossain said Islam is a hardworking youth.

Principal of Serajabad Rana Shafiullah College Golam Hasnayen said Islam scored a good result. He is an example of inspiration and enthusiasm.

Giving assurance, Head of Management Department of Mirkadim Hajji Amzad Ali Degree College Shyamal Chandra Saha and Lecturer Ashrafuddin Sarker said the college authority will provide free book to Islam till 4th year and all the fees have been exempted for him. During admission, the college gave him special concession.

District Education Officer Mohammad Faridul Islam said, “Our government wants to bring the autistic and physically-challenged people in the mainstream; Islam came to the door of the higher education, he will reach an honourable position in future.”
