bitter gourds going abroad from Munshiganj

The district is famous for producing vegetables. The bitter gourd, which is produced here, is going abroad.

The wholesale market of vegetables sits at Bajrajoginy Bazaar daily. The farmers bring their produce to this bazaar every day.

After purchasing the best quality bitter gourd from the bazar, it is sent to Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport by trucks and is later sent to Dubai.

The farmers of Rampal, Mohakali, and Bajrajoginy unions under Munshiganj Sadar upazila collect different vegetables including bitter gourd early in the morning and bring those to the Bajrajoginy Bazaar. The wholesale market of vegetables sits at the bazaar from 7am till 12pm daily.

As the bazaar is not far away, so the farmers do not have to spend extra things for bringing their produces to the bazaar. Only six per cent toll is realised from the farmers at the bazaar.

Besides bitter gourd, other vegetables including gourd, ridge gourd and cucumber are also available here. The vegetables are sold at the bazaar round the year.

A trader Md Jamal Uddin, of Shakharibazar village under Rampal union in Sadar upazila buys at least 10 maunds of different vegetables from the bazaar daily. Of those, around 500 to 700 packets of bitter gourd are sent to Dubai daily. In each packet, there are four kilograms of bitter gourd.

Jamal supplies bitter gourd to one Ali Hossen of Dhaka. Ali Hossen sends the bitter gourd to Dubai by the 3pm flight daily. Besides, he sends other vegetables to different districts.

He informed that he collects bitter gourd from Mymensingh, Sherpur, Meherpur, Bogra and Thakurgaon districts and sends the vegetable to Dubai round the year.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Munshiganj Md Humayun Kabir said, “The Bajrajoginy Bazaar is famous for vegetables trade. From this market, bitter gourd is exported abroad and several truckloads of vegetables are sent to different districts daily.”
