Launch capsize death toll reaches 29

VIDEO0013_WMV V9The death toll from Munshiganj launch capsize has risen to 29 with recovery of seven more bodies on Thursday afternoon.

Srinagar police station Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kutubur Rahman said: “A total of 22 bodies were recovered from the rivers in Shariatpur, Chandpur, Barisal and Bhola districts till Wednesday midnight. Later, another seven bodies were recovered Thursday from Bhola, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Lakshmipur and Barisal.”

“Among the bodies, 16 have been handed over to the family members so far”, he added.

BIWTA Director Mohammad Hossain said: “Kandari 2 joined the search for the capsized launch last night [Wednesday] but Pinak six has not been found even after four days of its capsize in Padma river.”

Captain Nazrul Islam, the navy officer coordinating rescue operations, said: “Kandari 2 is searching the river bed from 6 t0 10 kilometers downstream using sonar.”

Rescuers from different government agencies failed to trace the sunken vessel until Thursday morning. It is assumed that many passengers were stuck inside it.
