An officer of Detective Branch (DB) of police was killed in an attack by robbers in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj early Sunday.
A member of the gang who sustained bullet injuries from police firing was arrested from the scene, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
The deceased was identified as Shariful Islam Khan, 33, a sub-inspector of DB of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said Zakir Hossain Mazumder, additional superintendent of police of Munshiganj. Shariful hailed from Tangail district.
Describing the incident, Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Gazaria Police Station, said a team of the DB police out of suspicion chased a truck from Demra.
The robbers drove the truck towards Munshiganj after stealing an electric transformer from Demra area of the capital, the OC said.
At one stage, the team managed to stop the truck by putting barricade on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Gazaria upazila around 5:30am, the OC said.
As Shariful tried to embark on the truck, the robbers hit at his head and drove away, he added.
SI Shariful sustained critical injuries during the incident.
The policemen then divided into two teams. One team took Shariful to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and another continued their chase.
The DB official succumbed to his injuries after admitting to the hospital. The body bore injury marks on the head, DMCH sources said.
As the truck reached near Hossaindi area of Gazaria, the robbers, in their desperate bid, tried to evade the clutches of the law enforcers leaving the truck abandoned.
When the robbers run for nearly one kilometre, the law enforcers opened fire on them, leaving one of the gang members injured. The other robbers however managed to flee the scene.
Bullet-hit robber Shipon, 23, was undergoing treatment at DMCH under police guard. Shipon is from Kalkini upazila of Madaripur.
Police seized the truck loaded with wood dust and a transformer, said Shahabuddin Khan, superintendent of police of Munshiganj.
