BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has said the reason behind the government move to set up an airport at Arhial Bil in Munshiganj is to name it after ‘someone’s name’.
“There is no need for a new airport,” Khaleda said at a meeting with pro-BNP lawyers on Saturday.
Alleging that the Shahjalal International Airport is not being used properly, she said the main reason behind setting up another airport was to ‘plunder hundreds of billions of taka’.
“So, we are expressing our solidarity with the people of the area protesting the move,” Khaleda said.
The cabinet has already approved the proposal to set up the ‘Bangabandhu International Airport’.
Locals, who were to attend a demonstration at Muktangan in Dhaka on Wednesday protesting the establishment of the airport, had a clash with police.
They torched a bus and vandalised at least 20 other vehicles, including one of the Fire Service. Police filed a case against over 4,000 unnamed people in this connection.
