A youth has been killed and another injured in a so-called ‘crossfire’ with police at the city’s Rampura area early on Saturday.
The victim, ‘Shyamal’, 25, hailed from Kishoreganj, while injured ‘Anik’, 20, came from Munshiganj.
The shootout occurred in the early hours in Balurmat area of West Rampura, said Rampura police sub-inspector Swadhin Chandra Talukder.
Talukder said a group was trying to hijack around 2am and opened fire at the patrolling police squad which chased them. The police retaliated with in self-defence, he said.
At one stage the miscreants fled the scene leaving the two injured. Later the police took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where ‘Shyamal’ expired in the morning.
A revolver, one round bullet and some bullet casings were recovered from the scene, the police said.
This latest shootout occurred a week after three had been killed in alleged gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion.
Human rights organisation Adhikar said 127 people had fallen victim to extra-judicial killings in 2010, among whom 101 had been killed in ‘cross-fire’ with the law enforcers.
