Fire service divers have recovered bodies of three of the four passengers who went missing after a trawler carrying them sank in the river Ichhamoti on Friday.
Bodies of Bangladesh Shamay staff reporter Mahiuddin Chhoton, 26, businessmen Golam Kibria Konok, 30, and Shahidul Islam Azad, 38 were recovered around midday on Saturday.
Around 60 passengers were on board when the vessel sank 1.5 kilometres from the Sadar Upazila on its way to the Lalon festival at Tekerhat of Munshiganj’s Sirajdikhan Upazila around 9.30pm on Friday.
Rescuers were able to mark the location of the sunken trawler on Friday night.
Around 10 passengers were injured and were sent to hospitals in Munshiganj and Dhaka, the police said.
Sirajdikhan police chief Mahbub Alam quoted witnesses and said that the trawler sank after it collided with a sand-laden trawler.
Alam also said, “Most of the passengers managed to swim ashore. However, four people including Mahiuddin are still missing.”
He said that the accident occurred as none of the vessels had lights and added that the sand-laden trawler had been seized.
However no one was arrested, Alam said.
Munshiganj police assistant superintendent (ASP) Kamrul Islam told bdnews24.com that the fire service divers located the sunken trawler in the early hours of Saturday. However, there were no bodies in the vessel.
Rescuers have started their search for the missing passengers from Saturday morning, Islam added.
