The police have arrested a governing body member of the school at which a tenth grade girl committed suicide allegedly caused by a stalker.
“Abdul Hakim was arrested as he and some others allegedly favoured the stalker at a local arbitration held on the day the victim, Hasna Rahman Synthia, committed suicide,” Srinagar police chief Shakhawat Hossain told reporters on Sunday.
Hakim was sent to jail after he was produced before the District’s Magistrate’s Court.
Synthia of Baroikhali High School committed suicide on Aug 11, after being harassed by a stalker named ‘Jahangir’.
The victim’s father filed a case with Srinagar Police Station accusing Jahangir, his brother Jakir Sheikh and father Jamal Sheikh of instigating the suicide.
Locals handed Jahangir over to the police after Synthia’s death and he was sent to jail on Friday.
Investigation officer sub-inspector Aminul Islam said Synthia committed suicide fearing that Jahangir might physically harass her.
Police superintendent Shafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com that the matter was a matter of great concern. “Such an incident is unfortunate since there was a committee at the school to address harassment.”
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Saturday visited the school and vowed stern measures against those responsible.
