Construction works of Padma Bridge to be started next year

The physical works for constructing Padma Bridge with both roads and railways would be started on January 2011. The tender procedure for that would be completed on August 2010.

It will connect Barisal region with railways and change scenario of the overall socio-economic development structures in the southern region including Kukakata and Sundarban tourist zones.

Mozammel Haque Khan, secretary for roads and railways, in a press briefing at Barisal circuit house in a short break of his visit in the region on Saturday noon said this.

To develop railway services and networks in the country of 60 years old 248 locomotive engines would be replaced and more rail lines would be constructed, the secretary informed. The roads and railways secretary said Barisal-Dhaka highways will be expanded to four lanes like Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Mymensingh to expand smooth connectivity of the road communications with tourist zones.

The Kirtonkhola Bridge at Dapdapia to be completed within December and inaugurated by the prime minister while the bridges at Khepupara and Lebukhali on Barisal-Kuakata and Bekutia and Barisal-Khulna roads would also be constricted soon, he said.

Expressing deep condolence at the deaths of the secretary and additional secretary of the government in a road accident on Saturday, the secretary of roads and railways said every year losses of lives and properties cresses Tk 5,000 cores and closely monitoring and hardly executing rules of traffic law, developing conditions of roads and highways, operating vehicles by properly trained staffs need to reduce this loss.
