Tk 20.5 bln goes to water resources

An allocation of Tk 20.49 billion has been proposed for water resources sector in the budget for the next fiscal year, with the lion’s share earmarked for the Padma bridge.

Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, unveiling the Tk 1321.7 billion budget in the parliament on Thursday, said Tk 15.88 billion has been earmarked for dredging and Padma bridge construction under annual development outlay.

He said the government has set a target for construction of 270-km flood control embankment and 1600 flood control structures, and repair of 75-km roads in the next financial year.

Irrigation facility would be extended to 15,000 hectares of land, he said. Excavation of 25-km irrigation canal, re-excavation of 370-km canal, construction of 20 irrigation infrastructures and three rubber dams would be complete in the next year.

He said the government had formulated draft regulations on use of water and amended Water Resources Planning Act-1992 and was working to ensure coordinated management of Ganges water for the south-western districts.
