Infuriated locals blocked the Dhaka-Munshiganj route for one hour on Sunday demanding the removal of a barbed-wire fence that has been erected around Mukterpur Bridge.
Several hundred people gathered with placards and banners, questioning why the bridge was being fenced in, after so much land had been confiscated from locals for building it.
They brought out a procession and put up barricades in front of Mukterpur village in Sadar upazila causing long traffic jams on both sides of the highway.
The demonstrators alleged that their normal communication is hampered due to the barbed-wire fence.
Later being assured of their demands by officials, locals withdrew the barricade at about 9am.
