Owners of land acquired for the construction of the proposed Padma Bridge demanded of the government to pay compensation for the acquired lands at a reasonable rate.
The demand was made at a press conference held at Munshiganj Press Club on October 22.
President of Land Owners, Demand Realization Action Committee Moazzem Hossain Ratan read out a written statement at the press conference.
The statement said that the district administration acquired 64 acres of land at South Paiksha and Pugachi mauzas under Srinagar upazila for the construction of the proposed Padman Bridge. After acquisition of land the government unannounced the compensation rate which was lower than that for land acquired at Mawa area under Lauhajung upazila.
The statement said that the government as per announcement is going to pay compensation of Taka 1.05 lakh for a decimal of household land and Taka 37,000 for a decimal of cropland at South Medinimandal Mauza under Lanhajang upazila while
Taka 13,000 has been fixed as compensation for a decimal of household land and Taka 9,000 for a decimal of land of crop land at South Paiksha and Dugachi mauzas. The president of the action committee in the statement said that the land owners of South Paiksha and Dugachi mauzas would not accept the compensation at the improper rate.
The press conference was followed by the formation of a human chain in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner. A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner demanding compensation at a reasonable rate.
